OpenAI is no longer just powering conversations; it’s powering commerce. On Monday, the AI company announced a new feature that lets users make purchases directly through ChatGPT, in partnership with Etsy and Shopify.
The feature, called Instant Checkout, opens up a fresh revenue stream for OpenAI, which has so far relied largely on its subscription models. For merchants, it’s simple: they pay a small fee on completed transactions, while users face no additional charges for purchases.
“U.S. ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and free users can now buy directly from U.S. Etsy sellers right in chat, with over a million Shopify merchants, like Glossier, SKIMS, Spanx and Vuori, coming soon,” OpenAI said in a blog post.
Currently, Instant Checkout supports single-item purchases, but the company plans to expand to multi-item carts, more merchants, and global regions in the near future.
The Market Reacts
Investors cheered the news: Etsy shares jumped 7.3%, while U.S.-listed Shopify shares rose 4.5% following the announcement.
“Shopify merchants will be able to sell directly through ChatGPT conversations — no links or no redirects, just seamless commerce,” the platform said on its website.
For Etsy, the partnership underscores the potential of AI-driven retail. Rafe Colburn, Etsy’s chief product and technology officer, said:
“AI-powered and agentic shopping presents meaningful opportunities for the online marketplace.”
Colburn added that Etsy is already working with a tech partner — though he did not name it — to weave product discovery seamlessly into mobile experiences.
Behind the Tech
The backbone of this innovation is an agentic commerce protocol developed in partnership with payments leader Stripe. OpenAI also confirmed it would open-source the protocol, enabling broader adoption across the digital commerce ecosystem.
With AI now acting as a shopping assistant, recommender, and checkout channel all at once, OpenAI is signaling a future where conversation could be the new storefront.
